Newsletter January 2022

THE EXECUTIVE TEAM OFFICIALLY WELCOMES YOU TO 2022 AND WISHES YOU A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

This time last year we greeted the New Year with “renewed optimism” anticipating better times as well as a better year on the health front and, in one key respect, it was – the critical and successful development of the mRNA Vaccines. We also hoped to be done with the coronavirus; however, its mutations are not quite done with us. Nevertheless you, our members, have renewed your support and we continue to stay connected via Zoom, enjoying a variety of quality presentations as we most patiently await the return to in person meetings at Markland Wood.  ONWARDS AND FORWARDS!!!!

Notwithstanding the ever changing restrictions as case numbers increased, we hope you were able to enjoy the holiday season as once again, for a second year, we celebrated old traditions differently.

I recently learned some new phrases from a New York Times article that I would like to share with you, as they appear to be a sign of the times we live in:

BOOKCASE CREDIBILITY – believe it or not, some people chose to readjust their Zoom backgrounds, particularly where book shelves were in sight…just so others would think they read only serious books!

R.T.O. – these three little letters contain much angst for those still working full or part time and/or volunteering – “return to office” plans were hijacked more than once by coronavirus variants. It is also apparently not correct to ask folks when they are returning to work, as they have been working their socks off (or working in more comfortable socks) for the last two years.  R.T.O. is now replaced by “we’ll get back to you”.

ZOOMBIE – by definition, anyone who has spent hours on Zoom and experiences Zoom fatigue knows what it’s like to turn into a Zoombie!

As you know, we are always on the lookout for new members to join the Kingsway Women’s Club (KWC) Executive. That time is approaching when several members of the current “pandemic” Executive will step down. Pursuant to our by-laws, I am pleased to report that a Nominating Committee, chaired by Vice President Pam Harper, has been struck to identify candidates for your new Executive. Pam is joined by Darlene Dubbin, Past President and Margaret Logan, Member at Large. We are all familiar with that wartime slogan “We Need You!”. Well, your KWC Executive needs you!! We know that many of you are multi-talented from your pre-retirement life; we invite you to consider joining the KWC Executive. Infusion of new ideas, creativity and human capital are important so that the KWC can continue to give you, our members, the best membership experience.

As we all hunker down for what we hope will be a short Omicrom winter, you may wish to consider joining one of our book clubs which meet monthly via Zoom.

I would like to invite you to join us, from the comfort of your home, at the upcoming Zoom programmes (1:30pm), thoughtfully put together by your Programme Coordinator, Donna Renzetti. Keeping us connected will be Anne Heber, our Zoom host, who will send out the invitation to all members with the Zoom link by email. The meetings are for KWC members, however, guests are welcome to attend for a small fee.

January 14, 2022 – Healthy Eating for Healthy Aging, presented by Megan Burek (in store Dietitian at Loblaws).

February 11, 2022 – “A Good Wife”, author and activist Samra Zafar will share her story of strength and refusal to conform to expectations.

March 11, 2022 – Author and explorer Adam Shoalts, “Canada’s Indiana Jones”, returns to discuss his latest book “The Whisper on the Night Wind”, a Labrador adventure.

April 8, 2022 – Best Urban Strolls in Toronto, presented by Nathalie Prezeau, Author and Publisher.

Please prepare your favourite libation and settle in to your favourite chair – we  look forward to seeing you on the above dates!

Until we meet again, stay safe, stay well.
